Running wild, running free
I sometimes wish that could be me
Racing across the plains so fast
Leaving worries in the past

Running wild, running free
All the wonders you would see
Playing and racing all through the day
Then at night on the grass you would lay

Running wild, running free
Mustangs are very fast you see
So hard to catch yet many fall
From ropers trying to catch them all

Running wild, running free
Above a hawk rests in a tree
Looking left and looking right
Yet you're not anywhere in sight

Running wild, running free
The hawk is still there waiting for thee
Quiet now, no sound at all
It seems as though some rain might fall

Running wild, running free
Still waiting for thee, still waiting for thee
Hist, a sound, not far away
He had to wait all through the day

Running wild, running free
Here you come all filled with glee
Finally the waiting has passed
Seeing you racing 'cross the plains so fast

Running wild, running free
The hawk has waited to challenge thee
A race to see just how fast you are
To see you run like the mustang you are

Running wild, running free
How far behind you cannot see
Hoping that soon you will at last
Catch up to the hawk and run right past

Running wild, running free
Now there's the hawk; you can now see
The storm now has nearly passed
It came and went, so quick, so fast

Running wild, running free
Now you are catching up to me
Now three, now two, now one length away
You've practiced so hard all through the day

Running wild, running free
You're closing in now, can't you see?
You are as fast as a shooting star
Now do you see how good you are?

Running wild, running free
You are now passing under me
Although I fly and you must run
You love it so much, you think it's so fun

Running wild, running free
You're ten lengths ahead of me now, you see
Although I have flown, although I have tried
In a way YOU have flown; you have now passed me by

Running wild, running free
I see now I can't catch up to thee
How great you are, how far you've come!
Now you must return and tell everyone
That you've done the impossible, you've proved them wrong
They never believed you would try...so hard, so long
The hours past, the hours gone
Now you are envied, thought they may deny
You are like a flash of lightning sent from the sky
You ran so fast, you tried so hard
See what you can do when you keep up your guard?
You would not let me pass, you would not let me by
So yes, in a way, mustangs CAN fly
As long as you try, so long as you keep it up
You can reach your goals, just NEVER give up
Believe in your hopes, believe in your dreams
Maybe someday you'll be the fastest mustang ever seen
You can't let them get you
You won't even let them try
Those ropers can just say goodbye
You cannot be caught; you cannot be tied
No matter what, you can and will survive
Now do you see that you really ARE a part
Of this herd of horses, filled with love in every heart?
So remember what all has happened today
Hopefully the memories will stay

Running wild, running free
I sometimes wish that could be me
Racing across the plains so fast
Leaving worries in the past
