A Stranger To Me

I used to know and love you
You laughed appreciatively
When you talked…
It was passionate
Like your soul was afire
And it would never be put out

I liked to think we were
Friends…
Before you went away
Before you shrank
Below yourself
Into that debris of defeat

You used to be alive…
Where has that glow gone?
Your eyes do not sparkle
Like water in a new day
What say ye, friend?
Why do you not laugh?

For there is a difference,
Friend
Of living and being alive
And death
For if you will not be alive
As you once were
Why are you not dead?

You would walk
With your head held high
Your shoulders no longer
Carry the pride of a knight.
You’ve become a stranger
To the person who knew you best.

When you raged the world knew it
But we laughed about it anyway
I do not even see your anger,
Friend
It is hidden under the smuts
Of your soul’s distinguished fire

You’ve become alienated
Where is your heart?
Where be your soul
For I do not at all see it
Sitting here staring diligently
Into my own mirror of truths.
