If I Could

If I could live forever,
I’d never have to say good bye
If I could feel the clouds
I’d never have to see if they passed by
If I could touch the moon and stars
I’d bring one home with me
If I could reach the sun and planets
I’d bring you up and let you see
If I could test the waters
Without touching the shallow pool
I’d tell you they were warmer
Even though lying breaks the rules
If I could solve your problems
You’d have none left to solve
If I could read your mind
I wouldn’t ask at all.
But I realized I can’t do these things
And I noticed that things aren’t well
I wish I had these talents, though
If I did then that’d be swell.
But the angels are breathing down our necks
And also the people around
They want to know if we are an “it”
And tell us to be more proud
But our relationship is breaking
My talents just don’t help
They break your spirit like a twig
And call you a little whelp.
So let me ask you this question
Do you love me, or do you not?
I wish that you could tell me again
Please? Baby, I forgot!
So if I could go ahead
And touch the mighty stars
I’d never have to ask you
In your heart, how far?
How far until the finish line
And the 1st place trophy of gold
Because I’m ready for the chances to take
And baby, I want you to be bold.
So stop saying “If I could”
And think some more “I can’s”
Because I bet we’ll get along just fine
If we walk the roads hand in hand.
