Freedom

The clock is ticking
Veins are throbbing
Heart is beating.
Yet where do we go?
What do we do?
We stand.

Voices are raised up
Teenagers are braised up
Yet you pull the same stunts
Who is that yelling?
Where are they going?
Nowhere.

Lips are all swollen up
Gin and Bicardi fill our cups
Lift ‘em up, raise ‘em up!
Walk the procession
Stand at concession
Wait for freedom.

Blue robes are swishing heels
I wonder how it is you feel
Wondering what’s it to you or me
Did they say go?
Do we walk where they know?
Get moving.

Music drowns out my pleas
Smiling but no one sees
The wish for freedom in my eyes
Did they just call my name?
Do we walk to them, all the same?
Diploma.

They hand me the book-like form
The spine and pages are still warm
But inside the boundary’s torn
Is this finally freedom?
Do I need me, do I need them?
Freedom.
