Had I Known

Had I known that it would be the last time I’d see your face,
Then every step in life we had taken, I would retrace.
Had I known that as you left me
To go off, into a distant and unknown country,
That as the smoke from the guns surrounded you,
That your friends would die, one by one around you,
Then I would have held you just a little longer,
And my words would have been just a little softer.
Had I known that as you had lain upon the ground,
Your ears would be deaf to all the sound.
The only thing that would fill you mind,
Would be me, and together our times.
Had I known that you were thinking of me,
As you were across the wide and crystal sea,
Then maybe, just maybe I would have thought more of you,
Because your thoughts of me could have filled the ocean blue.
Had I know that you were to die for me,
To preserve my land, my country, my liberty,
Then I would have thanked you, before you fell to your knees,
In agony, and defeat.
Had I known that, as you breathed your last breath,
You did so, with no regrets.
But now my chance is up, your time here is over.
And how much I thank you, you may never know.
For you were a friend, and a friend you’ll always be.
But more importantly, you preserve my country.
Not only a friend, but a hero, too.
And that’s why I say…
THANK YOU.
