I take a step to my right
Then back to the left
Foiled by my own mind
I have only one direction to go.
I take the first step forward
And immediately the voices.
“You can’t, you won’t, Coward!”
I stop right away.
“You have nowhere to go but down.”
I feel the floor shift under me
And into the abyss
I fall.
I strike the ground hard
Face down in garbage, things not to be repeated.
I arise from the ground
And shake off the waste I’ve landed in.
“You can’t escape
You’ll go nowhere.
In suffering and pain
You shall forever live.”
“I’D RATHER DIE THAN BE TIED DOWN
TO SUFFERING AND PAIN”
I take another step forward,
The walls start to close in on me.
“You will go NOWHERE”
In a booming voice.
Like that of a lion’s roar,
Not a statement, but a command.
So I run
As fast as I can.
The walls begin to close on me
Once again.
The floor begins to shake as I run,
Walls still closing.
A dizzying array of confusion and loneliness.
Madness.
I run down the hall
Stumbling every step.
With quickened pace
I run from the walls.
An endless corridor of closing walls.
The faster I run the quicker the walls close
The more violently the ground shakes.
“Then you’ve chosen death.”
“THEN DEATH I DO TAKE”
Once again I quicken my pace;
I stumble to the ground.
But upon my stopping the walls no longer stop.
The room continues to shake.
I realize that now I am trapped
To continue running
Until the walls close in on me.
“IN DEATH I SHALL PART THIS CORRIDOR
THIS EMPTINESS.
AND FROM THIS PLACE
I WILL ESCAPE”
The walls are close.
Where I go now
I do not know.
One more time I stumble to the ground
From the shaking.
To never
Rise
Again
