One Summer, she and her parents,
came down from New York
I was so jealous of her,
living in New York City,
Seeing Broadway,
The Empire State Building
The Twin Towers.
Well I was 9
and for my birthday
my mom gave me make up to play with
So we were playing and I decided
I wanted to take a picture of her
and I took one of her profile
with the mascara running down her cheeks
She had been laughing so hard she cried.
in August, a couple years ago,
I played with the colors
and I got this, her cheeks are white
and the black streaks mar her skin
She had it in poster size on her wall.
She was so proud
She thought I was going to be
the next famous photographer
And she the loyal sidekick
who made it all happen
because God knew I couldn’t take care of myself
When it happened I checked the flight numbers
Checked the copy of the ticket she gave me
She was going to California
She and her parents were going to move there
They were tired with the bustle of the east coast
And they wanted to relax
I called her cell phone
Praying she missed her flight
“The number you have dialed in not available.
The Voice Mail Box of this number has not been set up,
please call back later.”
I called her house in NYC.
“Hey this is the Wright’s,
we aren’t available at the moment
probably because we’re moving to California.
And Dana if this is you,
Sarah will call you as soon as we get there.”
Yup that’s me worry wart major,
Maybe they’re stuck at the airport.
I’ll wait. They’ll let me know what happened.
They never called.
When the list of the dead came out I look under Wright
“Walter, Courtney, 29
Wright, Joseph, 43
Wright, Marie, 39
Wright, Sarah, 14
Wyatt, Steven, 32”
Joseph, Marie, Sarah.
The people who taught me how to skate
And showed me that just because we didn’t have money
Didn’t mean we couldn’t have fun
My Best Friend
My Living Sister
Gone
