I watch them at the wedding
Everyone set in pairs
The bridemaids sitting
Longing to be chosen

We sit in our purple colored dresses
Sipping sweet tea
And talking in southern accents
Just another southern wedding

I fiddle with my hair
As I listen to the music
Humming the songs I know

Renee and I are talking
About nothing important
Wedding arrangements and perfect men
Knights in shining armor and hair dye

We have some more sweet tea
We sit we talk
We’re told we have to dance now
The Bride with her maids

My cousin is laughing
Twirling, happy to be married
The girls and I grin and look happy
Wishing we weren’t there
In our purple colored dresses
Make up
Styled hair

Wishing we had a glass of sweet tea
Wishing we had someone to love

Hoping that knight charming
Doesn’t turn out to be a prince
Doesn’t want us for our money
Our DAR or DOC membership

Remembering debutante balls
And southern society
Being southern and pretty
But never quite Belle
Never quite having the
Honeyed tone
Perfect hair
Straight teeth
Great breeding

Being jealous cause
Somehow she made it
She’s the Southern Belle
We the Southern Pretties

Never quite there
Never quite dancing
Never quite happy
Never quite Belle
