Looking In

I stand in the water, and I stand alone,
I look down to see my reflection has gone,
Such a shock I felt, not seeing my face,
I expected to find it here, at least in this place,

I walked forward and no ripples were made,
They didn’t dance to the movement played,
They didn’t travel to unravel near the sand,
Not even to the droplets dropping from my hand,

I reached into it’s depths, my hands chaliced,
I thought I’d taste water, but I tasted malice,
When I spit it out, I spit it out muddy and gray,
It never sank, it settled atop and settled to stay,

I didn’t understand all that was going on,
I didn’t know why my reflection was gone,
I didn’t know why there were no ripples around,
Or where the mud came from that I had found,

And then I stepped upon the shore,
And saw that which I couldn’t see before,
I saw water because I was looking out from within,
But things look different when your out and looking in.
