The Dreamer

Bitter dreams are all that haunt me.
Can't tell fiction from fact, anymore.
Try as I might, I'm only left in a sweat,
Of frustration; of a damp agony.
Bad experiences only add more weight,
To my already heavy heart.
I don't know how much I can carry,
Before I can no longer breathe.
All this confusion only leaves more bruises,
In this violent and emotional war.
Between reality and a dream,
Tears are the only reminders of the torture.
Though I'd like to be the dreamer,
Who never dreams of regret or betrayal.
I could dream of a love; of joy again,
If only my heart would allow it.
I could dream of you...
And the comfort of your arms.
I could pretend to be perfect for
Just a moment or two.
Flawlessly in love with you.
Then, just before waking,
I could picture your precious face.
Would you smile just then?
So I may wake from this dream,
While believing in you and me,
Knowing that I still have that smile...
