Truth Heals

While walking to class
I notice that girl smiling
I remember a few days ago
When she couldn’t stop crying
She used to walk in the halls
With slow steps, head down
But now her head’s lifted high
She’d able to see the world around
She realizes she’s missed so much
Grieving over things she wished she had
She realizes that life’s no fun
When she’s always crying and always sad
She’s lost her first boyfriend
The reason, he told me not to tell
I don’t want to have to lie
But a promise is a promise; I must keep it well
She’s my very best friend
I’m confused about why I like her sad
I leave her for my other friends
Why do I not feel bad
But now she’s smiling as she walks
And I’m feeling okay too
She talks like she knows of the promise
But all of this talking, is it true
What is it like to know truth
Each word a needle stabbed deep into your skin
I wish I had tried to know what it was like for her
Always trying to keep the tears in
So now she knows the whole truth
Without me needing to breathe a word
I look at her and I see joy
Now her laughs can be heard
Truth hurts but it can also heal
It may take just a bit or a while
The proof of this is right here and now
The proof is in her smile
