Sitting in her chair
Coughing and hacking
Praying she not sick
Knowing she is
She can’t help it
She gags again
Swallowing anything that comes up
Hearing it again in her head
She knows she can’t be sick
But she knows she is
Tears welling in her eyes
She blinks them back
Trying to stay strong
One night that’s all she needs
She thinks
Knowing it’s not true
She can’t miss school
Grades are falling
After today a new slate
She knows soon it will be dirty
She draws again
The knife in her hand
She promised she knows
But it’s a way to stop
Thinking about this pain
She hears her name
Being called to leave
She sets the knife
Down and walks out
The door
To help a friend
Make it through the night
