The ashes fell all around, when fire licked the sky;
They moved to meet each other before sunrise.
Along the path they had made together, the flowers all died,
and sadness bloomed with the most rotten sense of pride.
He walked with a purpose; his face painted with shame.
He saw in the distance his lady laced with pain -
For she was preparing herself for the worst, all filled with disdain.
The tears flow freely from her eyes - his almost the same.
He holds her close, "We both knew this day would arrive."
She sobs without restraint, "But you've kept me alive!"
He holds back the regret, "You'll understand with time."
She lets it out again, "But you will no longer be mine!"
The mist forms around them and wraps around their limbs.
She digs her head into his shoulder, for she won't let go of him.
It's all falling faster now, the night's meeting it's end.
She's overcome with affliction; the sky has bled again.
"With this life we've shared has come new lessons to learn,
Sometimes you need to realize that love is going to burn.
I apologize if you don't understand but I won't return;
I've met a dame and she's promised me a lifetime in turn."
She looks up at him and gets dazed and lost in his eyes,
"Why did you say you loved me more than anyone if they were just lies?"
A stab in the heart; he was thrown aback with surprise,
"I'll always love you in my heart, one day this you'll realize."
She steps back with her heart in the palm of her hand;
He gave it back to her like he had always planned.
She stares in wonder already knowing she will never understand
why he'd leave her like this when she needed his help to stand.
The hours passed while they stood unaware of the time of night.
The woman tried to get him to stay but with no hope in sight.
He let out a tear because somehow he knew this wasn't right.
She saw it and caught it and held it with all her might.
The love of a lifetime had finally reached the end.
Both broken hearted but he won't admit he has to mend.
And the hours still pass but the sky's as dark as it began,
The ashes are still falling; the sky bled again.
