Scratches on the Coffin Lid

Knock three times on the coffin door,
No one answers and I'm trapped forevermore.

Awoken from my rest to sit up and hit my head on an oaken coffin lid,
Surely my bed wasn't made of such luxurious black satin?

And what is that smell?
I can't quite place it...
It smells like the dampened earth after rain's kiss has graced it.

Why is it so dark?
This blackness is unnatural.
Where is the sun?
It's almost as if I've been sealed up in an underground crypt...
But surely, they would never be so foolish as to not realize I was still
living and let that happen?

...Would they?...

That sound...a muffled voice as the mourners continue to weep above?
That scrape...some blind creature of the earth that bumped into the casket
of a newly turned grave?
The hollow footsteps as they walk away...
Wait, what's going on?
Why can't I see the light of day?

The horrid truth, the smell of death...
I soon realize the mistake they have made.

Push three times on the coffin door,
It won't open,
And I'm trapped under six feet of earth forevermore.

Pound three times on the coffin door,
They can't hear it,
And I'll be encased in this premature tomb forevermore.

Scratch three times on the coffin door,
It's no use,
And I'm left with bloody fingernails forevermore.

Scream three times beneath MY coffin door...

No one answers, and I'm trapped forevermore.
