I Saw

I saw them whip you
Your body was blood red and your heart blue.
I saw the pure evil in their eyes
And I heard your scream among the weary cries.

I saw them drag you out of sight
Not caring if what they did was right.
I saw your body limp as a doll,
Your spirit broken like a dove that took a fall.

I saw them condemn you to death
Imagined you tremble your last breath.
I saw the hurt upon your face
Yet you knew you had to save the human race.

I saw them place a crown of thorns upon your head
And from the wounds dropped blood ever so red.
I saw you struggle with that cross on your back
Even though strength you surely lacked.

I saw them beat you ‘til you nearly died
Couldn’t help but join with the people who cried.
I saw them pound those nails into your flesh
As they gulped down water that was surely fresh.

I saw them raise your cross up high
And you knew you were going to die.
I saw them spit at your feet
And cried when our eyes began to meet.

I saw everything they did to you, my son,
They laughed like it was so much fun.
I saw you die right before my eyes,
Yet I could do nothing but cry.
