Guilty Conscience

You awaken now to find yourself
all surrounded by guilt and regret.
Ashamed, you now are, for the all the time you spent,
pleading your breath away for a life to repent.
And you preach to yourself, "I shouldn't be upset, shouldn't be upset"
but the day still grows whether you do or not.
In my absence, I realize that we could never be,
for emptiness and memories take the place of me.
But don't you worry, they're taking to me kindly
in this place where happiness can never be bought
and the price of a smile is always free.
I'm always watching over you, to see if you're happy,
though with your own conscience you have fought
and found yourself back in misery.
When life seems unbearable and time cannot heal,
you'll find my essence breaking through.
When air seems like hardly enough to satisfy,
you ought to be knowing, my love, what time holds true.
But in these times where heartache seems prevalent
and the emptiness is devastatingly apparent,
you should be knowing, my dear, that I'm sorry.
-I'm sorry I couldn't be there to set your heart free,
but keep your chin up and smile toward the sky; Smile -
when tomorrow starts without me.
