FOR THE LOVE OF THE PRIZE

I STOOPED TO PULL THE UGLY WEEDS
AS THEY SURROUNDED MY ROSE.
I WANTED IT TO BE SAFE FROM HARM
AND GROW STRONG OR SO I SUPPOSED.

I STRETCHED MY HAND GENTLY TO TAKE
THE THING THAT THREATENED MY PRIZE
ONLY TO KNOW AND FEEL MUCH
PAIN
AS I WITHDREW MY HAND IN SURPRISE.

MY ANGER FLARED FOR JUST A TIME
AS I SAT IN MUCH DISMAY
WANTING TO FORGET MY WORK AT HAND
AND CALMLY WALK AWAY.

THEN I THOUGHT THIS ROSE IS MINE
WHO ELSE WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT?
SO AS A GARDNER I PUT ON MY GLOVES
AND WITH MUCH DILIGENCE I DID PERSIST.

MUCH LIKE GOD OUR MASTER GARDNER
TAKES TIME TO REMOVE OUR WEEDS
WE PROTEST AND CAUSE HIM PAIN
HOLDING ONTO OUR FORBIDDENDEEDS.

HE ONLY WANTS TO HELP US GROW
SHELTERING US FROM ALL HARM
PROTECTING HIS PERFECT WORK TO COME
AS WE GROW IN HIS ARMS.
