Soft Focus

Take the sleeping pills
Shake off these feelings
Everything’s better for tomorrow
The world’ll rest just fine alone
The dramatics will pass
As the waterworks flood
Take out your eyes
And rest.
The world looks better in
Soft focus anyway
Less sharp images
Like the knives stabbing
You in the back
The painful feeling
That you dread
Shake off these feelings
The world’ll rest just fine
Without you.

Yes, take the sleeping pills
Rest your head on your own bed of lies
Down them with a glass of bourbon
The ones you couldn’t help
But hide
From us
And cover them up with
Mockingbird feathers
As you run from your nightmares
That slink in your sleep.
Take the sleeping pills and
Listen to this broken record
Everything’s better in soft focus anyway
Soft focus anyway
Soft focus anyway
Your eye sockets burn so take out your contacts
Pull out the 8-tracks
Turn off your brain
And take the sleeping pills.

Take a day off from screaming at me
Slip into your tightest clothes
And squeeze into a dream bubble
Wander yourself to the edge of the earth
And roll yourself across the line
As you wait for the ambience
To set in.
Riddle me this, boyfriend
Can you see the dotted line between us?
The perforation
The separation
That disconnects the world apart?
God
Just take the damn sleeping pills
So I can roll you up inside
And slip you down the water’s edge
To sink and swim
And listen like I said
Take the sleeping pills
Everything’s better in soft focus anyway.
