The Mask

Can’t anybody see the frown bind the smile
Doesn’t anybody notice the tear trails down her face
Or that her eyes are red from crying
Or the deep red scars trailing down her arms
Of course they don’t
It can’t be the bright sunny girl
Who sits at the front with her friends
And always has a smile on her face
That goes home every night
And sits alone in a dark cupboard
Then cries for hours on end
Asking why the world is as it is?
Why is everything so hard?
Isn’t it easier to just give up?
It can’t be no one can wear a mask that well
No it can’t be the bubbly charming girl
Who is always laughing
It can’t be the enthusiastic, smart child
Who always gets work done
No it can’t be her
That whenever she sees anything sharp
Has the urge to pull it across her arms
Or evermore increasingly her wrists
No one can mask their feelings like that
It can’t be the girl who was standing here
Laughing with her friends yesterday
That’s lying face down on the floor
In a pool of her own blood
With a bloody razor clenched in her dead hand .
