Our Flag

I have lived for two hundred and twenty three years,
I was sewn and created by a great lady,
I have been hated,
Burned,
Stepped on,
But what have I done,
I fought with soldiers during battle of Normandy,
I was torn to shreds in Vietnam by a soldier,
Which were used to mend the wounds of a fallen comrade,
I have seen it all,
Wars,
Battles,
The dead,
It’s not easy to serve you country,
It’s the burden I bear,
I sit up top on high flag poles,
On the walls of classrooms,
even on the bumper,
Of your cars,
I see it all,
But do you see what I see,
I see a class room full of students, who have to be told to stand,
I see a class room of students, who don’t pledge their allegiance,
I understand if your religion denies it,
I know I’m just a piece of fabric,
but to some I’m more than that,
I listened to a teacher once,
He expressed his emotions freely,
about two students who didn’t stand,
To disrespect something,
Even if it is a mere piece of fabric,
That represents freedom,
And the country we live in,
Made him sake his head in disbelief,
Maybe to some today,
It’s the government I represent,
No,
I represent the good of this country,
Freedom and unity,
And now,
In the time of need,
When unity amongst people is desired,
We are at war,
And I! Am disrespected,
For the choices of our Government,
I do not represent the Government!
On a day to day basis,
I represent the soldiers,
The soldiers who have fought,
Even now are dieing,
So you can live in this great country,
And be free,
Yet there are the some, who take it for granted,
So next time you have to stand for me,
And decide not to,
Remember I represent the good of this country,
I am the one, who covers the coffins,
Of brave soldiers,
Who fought for YOU!
And DIED FOR YOU!
Will you continue to disrespect them,
Like you have me,
I know I may mean nothing to you,
But I mean something to them,
So stand with everyone else,
Say the words with everyone else,
Yes school work at the time may be important,
Gossip between your friends,
It’s only a few lines,
And only takes seconds to say,
Nothing is more important than freedom,
When you pledge your allegiance to me,
You’re pledging your allegiance to your country,
Family,
And Friends,
I am more than a colorful piece of fabric,
That is raised on your campus everyday,

I am the American flag,
The symbol of freedom,
And the symbol of this country,
Forever may I wave,
For I will never be defeated.
