Today's Sin

It’s the greatest sin,
That I commit again, and again.
As the tides of this life
Smooth the golden sands
Of opportunity
To be like someone else,
And crash me upon
These infinite shores
Of the desolate world around,
Filled with copies of copies,
In which I dig for salvation
Six feet down,
And then down into hell-
‘Cause in these lingering thoughts of you,
Cast in that fiery light of difference,
It is that I exist.
And I dived into that vast sea,
Deeper and calmer than the masses,
Pushed down upon my eyes
With the palms of my hands,
And strove for the darkness
To try and cease the flames
Within my mind,
But these feelings for you
Lit even that dark place,
And yet all I saw was me -
All alone again -
So it came that I,
This bat out of hell
Escaping with love,
Drown in the emptiness,
To be washed upon the shore again,
Due to that which let me flee,
That greatest sin of all -
That sin of loving me.
