Helping a Friend

Friend of only a year older
Problem-she couldn’t stay sober
She dragged others into her games
But she turned out to be the worst
Experimenting with new things and drugs of choice
Brilliant young girl, if she’d only use her voice
To speak up and be heard, or even to change the world
Something you would never know
Only a year ago she’d never touch it
Now she can’t get enough of it
She hides in her pain and her alcohol helps her to love it
It’s a disaster
Witnessing a friend who does this
Especially when you know she loves it
But being in the mess too
Now I’ll never know what we both could do with our minds
Her life changed over alcohol
Every evening call and ride around to get drunk
Who knows what will happen or what could have
If she were sober more we’d know what should have come from such a bright
young girl
But every mistake she makes adds up on a list
And every hit and take makes her more liable to forget
What she had going for her and how she’s wasting a great life
And a great time may add up to a bottle
But in the end it’s just plain wrong and stupid
Don’t even know why we use it as an excuse
To what we feel is wrong and useless in our minds
And both at different times experiment without the other
But I’m trying to change I hope she does too
She hasn’t a clue what a mess she’s getting in
I just wish I could have just told her
Life will be easier if you just stay sober
