Childhood Battle

I do not remember why
We went toe to toe; he and I
At the swings swinging fists
The first to throw: yet he missed
Quickly I made him pay
At the park that summer day
Until his family put him on me
But my uncle would not let it be
He came and parted the sea
But left him on top of me
Moments later the show reversed
Seconds after his family dispersed
In the middle of that summer heat
I slammed his head into the concrete
Until my uncle took me away
From the scene that summer day
“That’s how you do it”, he said to me
Proud as he could be
A certain joy I took away
From the park that summer day

This happened when I was about 8. I got in a fight at the park with a
friend of mine. I told him to throw the first punch and he did. Then I let
him have it. The most significant thing for me is as I was walking away
with my uncle he told me, "That is how you do it". I'll
never forget that.
