My Halo

I woke up from a deeper sleep
to a much too different sky
and for the first time in my life
I saw an angel cry.
I prodded her too gently,
I asked her to stand tall.
Her strong will drove her here
where her tear-filled eyes told all.
"Bring me so far back,
back to last September
where sapphire blue skies
and love is all I remember.
Bring me back home again,
let me see my friends.
I must see the ones I love
before my time here ends."
Her pleas fell from her lips
and filled our ears with song.
I held her up for mere lifetimes;
she needed me to be strong.
I woke up to a different day,
To unsent "thank-you" letters.
I traveled long and far for love
and found something far better.
When time was dark and difficult,
An angel gave her wings
to help me fly when I'm pulled down
and give me words to sing.
She was a beautiful kind of special
where everyone needed a part.
I feared but laughed with the oblivious;
I kept us in my heart.
Together we sang loud enough
for all the world to hear
that here we are and proud now
We have nothing left to fear.
I told her now, "Keep your chin up.
Always show that perfect smile.
The world can be so cruel sometimes -
So sardonic and so vile."
She looked at me then, laughed and sighed
and embraced me long and kind.
"You're an angel; the world's in love with you,
just don't leave me too far behind."
She may lose a halo or maybe even two
and remember those she'd miss,
But I admire her now and always will;
She's my happiness.
Today I lost and kept what I love;
I gave my new wings a try.
I felt the love none will understand;
-Today I saw my best friend cry.
