Monster

It’s a scene I know well
of silence and space and emptiness,
it finds me in the dark
hiding - under the covers
like a child crying out for help,
for a light to kill the monster’s shadow.
A simple light, but for a simple mind
it cures the threat, slays the danger.
Dangerous thoughts hide away in the night
and I fight to succumb to them -
to their ways… and their lies.
Almost as if I, like a screaming child,
were crying out for the light,
familiarity. Safety from the beast.
But still I sit here, drowned in despair,
alone and afraid but entirely
numb. And I wait -
under the covers for my monster friend,
hiding from the blinding light.
