Black Balloon

crawl out on the rooftop with me
and look down at the city lights
we’re at the edge of Venus
with every star in sight
and even though they mock us
their spark will never match your eyes
for to me, it’s quite so obvious
their brilliance stares into mine
so hold my black balloon
and let it fly away
by the helium that rises
as the depression floats astray
into the midnight summer sky
I’ll watch it climb out into space
passing by the jealous stars
and taking Venus in a race
I won’t even close my eyes
until I watch the illness rend
and the whole world hears the pop
and the ribbons down descend
so kiss me on the rooftop
it’s no one but you and me
no more black balloon to linger
so no one else will see
only the stars are here to envy us
and Venus smiles down
I think it’s only quite so obvious
this moment’s forever bound
and I know your heart beats so fast
as the blood is flooding through my veins
funny it tries to rush all to your chest
all because my lips so crave your taste
so take the remains of my balloon
and throw them out to sea;
contagious is that illness
that was the balloon infecting me
