It Was I

He looked past me thinking, "One better may come after."
Yet it was I, who brought him laughter.

When shadows covered him within the oppressive night,
It was I, who reached out and brought him light.

When his music fell silent, and all the chords were wrong,
It was I, who stirred silence and made for him a song.

Oh, endless times he turned from me, leaving me all alone.
When at last he looked for me…it was I who was gone.
