The greatest person in the world
Was always there to say a word
There to make me feel good
Just like I knew he always would
It was all good when I was five,
He taught me how to jive
When I was a little older
We climbed trees and sat together on top of a boulder.
Being in the garden, or as we call it “the jungle”
Listening to the little, helpless plants mumble
And watching them grow
To be made into more than we know.
Fishing and being outdoors
I couldn’t ask for much more
From a wonderful guy
I didn’t think that he would die
When I was about eight
He went into the hospital very late
I didn’t know what was going on
But something was wrong.
He was very sick, a problem with his heart.
I knew something wasn’t right from the start.
We visited him in his room
Bringing flowers in full bloom
We cheered up and tried to cope
We never gave up all our hope.
He came home later that week
But he was still very weak.
When we went to visit him,
I kept watch, always saying how much I love him.
We spent as much time with him as we could,
For the limited amount of time when we had the change, him seeming pretty
good.
Soon the unthinkable became reality
To shock me and the family
Soon, on Christmas, he accidentally went and slipped
And broke his hip.
Rushed into the emergency room
To think he might be reaching his doom,
My parents told me the story,
But all I could do was to pray, hope, and worry.
Often we went to be with him the entire day
Bringing things to brighten his stay
I brought my stuffed Christmas puppy, do make him smile and not be droopy
He named him Snoopy.
He was having a few problems after
So they could not complete the surgery, spending a while without laughter
Until New Years Eve,
When they finally had the surgery done, just like we believed
After he kept switching from hospitals to Nursing Homes,
In hope to go home
Over the next few months
They found more things wrong, a bunch
It felt all downhill from there
I felt it in the air
Early on a March morning,
I was ready to go to a competition for dancing
But my dad had already left unexpectedly, saying he had to get called into
work
Writing me a note to wish me good luck
I had a great day, dancing underneath the intense light
Not knowing what I would expect coming home that night.
My mother sat us down and told us the truth, what was wrong.
They had lied about where dad had really gone,
He had left for New Jersey that day
Since he had received a call saying that Grandpa wasn’t doing so good and
that he should come down to visit and stay
A few hours later, my dad was almost there
When aunt Mary called with new he couldn’t bear
He was very sad
To hear that he was dead
When she finished, were all crying almost in an instant
Knowing that he is now distant
The next morning we went down for the wake,
A lot of courage it did take
My whole family was there to mourn the loss of him
In his coffin, sadly looking so empty and thin
It was really hard
But everyone stuck together to make it past the invisible guard
Before the funeral, they played Taps
In honor of him, to say goodbye for one last
Time. So now every time when I hear that song,
I think of him and try to stay strong.
I was sad for a while
Treasuring his last memories, making them worthwhile
Without him, I didn’t think I would get through
With out my family and faith too.
I remember him each day, without having to hid
And now I realize that he never really left my side,
He is looking from above, without him my life leavening
But he is now the greatest angel in heaven.
