I am.
Two simple words that can
Mean a thousand things.
I am a book.
Stories, experiences, similes,
Paragraphs, words, sentences, and more.
A pen poised above the page,
Waiting…waiting to write the next chapter.
I am a woman.
Trained from birth to respect,
But never to be respected. Grown in an
Old fashion mix of now and then.
Waiting…waiting for the respect.
I am an American.
Blood of my ancestors shed pleas
For my loyalty. Threaten my country,
And an old stirring is born.
Waiting…waiting for a chance to prove it to all.
I am a sibling.
Born into a family with too many children,
So different from the others.
Alone amidst the turmoil.
Waiting…waiting to be noticed.
I am a writer.
I sit at my computer, and visualize
The words on the screen.
I see before I write.
Waiting…waiting for my work to be completed.
I am a student.
Hours at a time are lost in the shuffle,
The endless dance of school.
Don’t lose your balance, for everyone is
Waiting…waiting for you to fail.
I am alone.
Surrounded by people, I can feel their life
But still. I am alone.
Forgotten and ignored.
Waiting…waiting to be discovered.
I am a dancer.
I dance for myself, in the mirror
Or in the rain. I dance for love, joy,
Peace, fun, and for the promise of tomorrow.
Waiting…waiting for a partner to dance with me.
I am a survivor.
Nothing can bring me down,
Not rape, not beatings, not failure.
Push on, fellow survivors.
Waiting…waiting for the next challenge.
I am a counselor.
Sit and talk to me, trust and
Confide in me. I tell no lies
And keep all secrets.
Waiting…waiting to help those in need.
I am.
The two simple words that can
Mean a thousand things.
I am.
