What Lies Beneath

You sweet talk
and promise of eternal loving.
Filling me with lies
and whispering sweet nothings.
A sincere smile
with a flash of your teeth
Still doesn’t hide
what lies beneath.
I can see right through you,
I’m calling your bluff.
I’m telling you now
That enough is enough.
How could you do this to me?
I was always Daddy’s little girl.
You vowed with your life
To give me the world.
But instead you took mine
And my world crumbled thereafter.
Now all the money and the gifts
and the trips wouldn’t matter
if only you would take back
the grief you’ve given me.
If only one more time
my soul could fly free.
But the pain is too much.
I can never be the same.
All the love in the world
couldn’t make me love you again.
You seduced me and then
pulled the rug from under my feet.
If only I had the courage to defeat
what lies beneath.
