Fading Sunrise

I shiver in my corner
of this dark and dismal cell.
Teardrops quiver,
lingering on my face.
Sunlight fingers
creep under the night,
Slipping through
the bars of my cage.
I hug my misery shroud
back around my shoulders.
So mistrustful
of the Hopeful light.
I have hidden for so long
in these suffocation shadows,
Holding myself together,
constricted by pain and fear.

The Sunrise beckons,
whispers of promise-
Promise of freedom
and life.
Pale fingers walk
across the frozen floor,
Tempted to wash
in the golden light.
Cold hands rejoicing
in this unknown light,
Dragging me closer
to this mysterious beam.
Beauty dusts
my pale, wet cheeks.

I dance and twirl
in these beams of life.
I watch myself shatter,
a million tiny pieces of light,
Floating in the air,
and streaking through the bars.
I am free, free
to live and to love.
I dream of racing clouds
and raindrops on my face.
