Hero

The walls of nails are closing in on you
And the ceiling is coming down
Not a bead of sweat kisses your head
Because you know the only savior
Is the one beating beneath your skin
Skin of steel, a heart cloaked with diamonds
That’s what they all perceive you as
But I see through your humble exterior
Your loyal shadow is as vain as you are
You beguile the vulnerable from depression
But these acts of “love” infect each soul
With an intolerable cancer; infatuation
A deep passion that you refuse to accept
Because you are The Savior
And you don’t commit to the saved
Everyone you rescue is a sacrifice to you
They are your sheep in this delusional valley
And from the naked eye I am the woolliest one
But you and I both know I never needed you
I’m in the herd only to warn the incognizant
I will save them from your connivances
Plotting beneath the shade of tears
And when you lay in the empty field
Head in palms, pondering the wrongs in your conspiracy
I’ll tap your shoulder lightly and ask
Who’s the hero now?
