A Friend's Promise

I'm watching your life
Just fill with dismay
I wish I could help
If only there was a way

As I hear you cry
I'm aching inside
I try to be strong
As my true feelings hide

You want to give up
And end it all now
But being there for you
Was my solemn vow

You're consumed with pain
I can see it in yours eyes
As you weep to me
Asking me why

I have no answers
For I do not know
But life can get hard
So don't let go

You've never known
True beauty within
For the streets alone
Have skilled you in sin

These people you've met
Along your journey
Have taught you nothing
I hope you can see

You're learned to steal
And not to care
Committing crimes
While being aware

Killing your body
Never a big deal
Spending on drugs
Would replace a meal

Twenty years old
It's time to be grown
For your wild oats
Have now been sewn

I promise you friend
I'll be at your side
With every obstacle
And every stride

There is one thing
That I'll need from you
A promise to me that
You'll try hard to pull through
