Saying Goodbye

in the night which smelt of pain
sprinkled down the blurring rain
and splashed harsh upon the cheek
of the girl so mild and meek

who knelt in the muddy dust
because of how she knew she must
to say goodbye to him at last
or live forever in the past

and the bright tears falling to the ground
mix'd with the blood all around
the scarlet rivers stained her hand
which reached to touch the wounded man

her melodious voice whispered soft
to his eyes looking far aloft
how forget him, she never would
even though she knew she should

or his death would ever be her life
unable to cope with so much strife
so she kissed his cold lips stained with blood
and held his cold hand wet with mud

she had known when he left for war
it was likely they would be no more
but for all that she had kept her heart
without lacking a single part

all for him and for his love
and so now did she look above
into the sky so filled with lights
and gave it up with all it's rights

and longed to forget him in full
seeing this as merely lull
in her life so blessed and fresh
so exuberant in youthful flesh

so she arose and walked away
planning for the coming day
but her foot faltered not yards from
where she had only just come

and sank she to the soaking grass
a sobbing, shaking, weeping mass
and cried her heart out to the earth
and saw no more light-hearted mirth

they say you can't die from a heart broken
but that's just because none have spoken
of that life no more than death
when we live though we have nothing left.
