Sex and Magic

Sex and magic-
if you can believe that;
it's what it was,
what it used to be until
we found ourselves again;

Sex and magic-
so utterly dramatic
and yet not so;
a whisper of touch
against a scream of flesh;
a dewdrop of friendship
on the thorn of love;

Play and promise-
the future and the past
dancing together as if
they've been married
their whole lives-
as if they really believe
in themselves and in us,
as if they really feel
what we still covet,

One night or a hundred
it's irrelevant;
one life or none-
I couldn't tell you
what would be different except-
except that I'd miss you,
even if I'd never known you,
even if I'd never had the chance to,
I'd still miss you nevertheless;

Sex and magic-
is how we are
when life would like to forget;
sex and magic
is what I call it when
love falls just short of;
sex and magic
in the stony corridors of
a graveyard heart,
sex and magic
is what I call it
when and if I call it at all.
