“Created in God‘s image” doesn’t mean
five fingers or five toes upon each limb,
nor anything, I think, that can be seen,
nor does it matter if God’s “Her” or “Him.”
Defining “image,” in the sense divine,
must just refer to something of the soul --
nothing of appearance, something more fine --
no mere trait but a quality that’s whole.
What image does Divinity possess,
and are there things outside of this gestalt?
Do angels have this image more or less?
Where in creation does this image halt?
Is the image sentience or sorrow --
a joyous now or surprise tomorrow?
Suppose that “image” by which we assume
to mean we are reflections of our source,
is our conceit and what we dare presume
is human conception that lacks true force.
We think that we are likenesses of God
and that we are representations true
but looked at closely, this fantasy’s odd;
maybe “image” is just a word for “view.”
Perhaps the meaning is that all the world
is only intellection and notion,
and all the drama into which we’re hurled
is nothing but God’s whimsy in motion.
“Image” might just mean fantasy or thought --
A vague formulation in which we’re caught.
