First Time Apart

She picked up the phone
To tell him she felt alone
And soon she began to cry
Wanting his words to comfort her
She could only just remember
And in hopelessness let out a sigh

Wasn’t anything she could do
It just couldn’t ever be true
She would stand by the door
Waiting for him at night
To come home and hold her tight
After setting his things on the floor

She’d ask him where he’d been
And hear traffic was bad again
He’s kiss her on the cheek
And he’d pick her off the ground
Gently swinging her around
She’d just laugh and shriek

It was the first time they were apart
He’s always be in her heart
With the best times they ever had
With his picture by her side
She spoke softly as she cried
“God must have needed you Dad”
