Every other car you see on the road
has flags waving, decaled to the windshield.
Part of its intent is simply to goad
the “cells” that got our liberties repealed.
We’ve taken our country for granted, true,
should wholeheartedly pledge our allegiance,
but I don’t see what driving flags can do;
It burns Arab oil and makes a stench.
It makes us look so fundamentalist --
the very thing that we’re also fighting.
It smacks of a fad; it’s oppressivist;
it’s more ostentatious than uniting.
We let ‘em shred, fade and hang in the dark;
Is National Pride really our remark?
