in dead silence
drenched in cold sweat
scarcely breathing
his target is set
i calmly hush her
as she begins to cry
she and i both know
this is the night we will die
we can hear him
as he staggers up stairs
i silently pray for this burden
for it is too heavy to bear
the door is bolted and locked
as he yells in drunken rage
my eyes stay fixed
as i continue to pray
i hug her close
as she trembles in fear
and i continue to pray
as i have for years
and he yells and curses
as he beats down the door
but i continue to pray
as i'm knocked to the floor
i feel the pain
again and again
but i continue to pray
that it's all just pretend
and through the corner of my eye
he slaps her face
and i can her her cry
as he picks up his pace
he pushes us out
through the open doorway
we run down the stairs
as i continue to pray
and he yells and curses
for us to get out
so we run out in the rain
her screams getting loud
he follows us
out in the storm
yelling and cursing
as she continues to mourn
and looking him
straight in the eyes
i can see the fury
and i pray that they lie
she and i
lying flat in the grass
she cries and she screams
as the blows fly past
and he suddenly stops
no crying; nothing but rain
all is quiet and numb
there is no more pain
and all that's left
as he kneels down and cries
for my last prayer was answered
i prayed that we'd die
