Sitting on my porch
During summer's twilight
I can see the stars coming out now
Playing with eachother
Dancing in the great heavens above
So large that my eyes strain from trying
So desperately to see it all
In one beautiful gaze
I reach into my pocket
And place the pipe into my hand
I carved it myself
From the wood of the tall ash in my front yard
Placing the leaves in the bowl
I strike a match against the side of my chair
A black scrape remains on the chair
To immortalize this moment of perfection
The sun setting
My pipe smoking
A feeling of utter comfort
As I see heaven before my eyes
Stars bowing before the greatness of the sun
Chariot races across the sky
Two great spoons delving out starlight
To the eagerly awaiting world below
Each star
Like the eyes of God
Twinkling at me as though proud of me
Perhaps the scratch won't be the only thing left to immortalize this
moment
Perhaps my memories will serve me better
But with my next puff of smoke
I have already forgotten
My moment in heaven
As I awake from my slumber
And back into reality.
