Feathered Royalty

A gentle hush falls over the pond
the crickets chirp a chorus of announcement
the reeds cease their rustling,
the birds end their song,
to behold the king and queen.

They descend upon the realm like a faerie mist
enchanting the eyes of the lowly creatures.
Draped in sparkling white, displayed with flourish
and ebony crowns about their faces,
feathered royalty.

Like entering the castle, they slide onto the water
the marble surface melting under their silky touch.
The lords and ladies of the court glide about below the pair,
remaining silent under the glassy plane that divides them,
watching for a glimpse of their regal arced visages.

They flow together in a timeless dance,
ancient as the smooth rocks on the lake bottom.
Sunlight shines upon their shimmering garments,
setting them aflame with an angelic glow,
the fires left shimmering in their wake.

But when nature's music halts it's playing,
and the wind stops singing the exalting tune,
the king stretches his long neck skyward,
and they both take off in a leap,
heading for the heavens where they belong,
lovely children of the sky.
