Amid my dreams of darkness, death, and despair
I need to understand the coming of dooms
My foot comes down on the cemetery’s stare
On a gargoyle’s face horror looms
Walking through the cemetery
Watching death’s dreadful deed
Confronting my task I do not tarry
I’ve come to fulfill my cursed need
Unearthing those gone with an iron spade
I ignore the droning protests of the dead
They sing laments for their fruitless crusade
My arms become as heavy as lead
I pry open a coffin that has a demonic adornment
The contents within are very macabre
I see the corpse within has faced eternal torment
I about face, hearing a moaning sob
I drop the shovel, hearing a moaning voice
I listen to the corpse’s raging ire
Seeing my hesitance the dead rejoice
Enraged, I set the corpse on sacred fire
The voices speak even louder still
Speaking in my head they tell me so
It is now me they want to kill
Their mourning dirge comes to a crescendo
They speak of darkness, death, and despair
I shout, “Why do you haunt those alive?”
The ghoul’s answer is a dreadful stare
They pull me down into their terrible hive
They tell me now their countless stories
Valor and honor abound in their tale
Knights of the old, countless glories
An age old quest for a sacred grail
The never ending hunt for an immortal chalice
Corrupt in their passionate search for the truth
Now they are full of anger and malice
Their fruitless search for a fountain of youth
I now understand the folly in their ways
An unholy way to find immortality
I try now to escape from their maze
The leader comes and puts an enchantment on me
I am no longer enthralled with his terrible heart
The leader gets up on his terrible mare
The spell is broken, I awake with a start
Nightmares of darkness, death, and despair
