Note: The quotations represent the speaker in the poem. The italics-if they
show up- contain the refrain but also represent what the speaker is saying
to herself. The normal print represents the word or voice, if you will, of
God. It was a thought I had in church. I was compelled to reach out to
others around me who were struggling to find the love and faith in God they
want.
“Lift up your glass,
Ladies and gentlement.
It’s time to honor
Our most respected guest.”
Walk in head held high,
Look through the rows
Choose another one
You think should cry.
Touch my hand
I might weep for you
Touch my heart
You might weep too.
Walk in head held high,
Look through the rows
Choose another one
You think should cry.
Walk away
Turn from me
Stay here
Then you will see.
“Lift up your glass,
Ladies and gentlemen,
As we remember
Our most respected friend”
Walk in head held high,
Look through the rows.
Choose another one
You think should cry.
Love me
Bow down before the alter
Have faith in me
Your step will never falter.
Walk in head held high,
Look through the rows.
Choose another one
You think will try.
“Lift up your glass,
one last time please.
I’m walking through the aisles
To help you Jesus.”
Walk in head held high,
I’ll look through the rows.
I’ll choose the one I know
Love’s you because you died.
“Ladies and gentlemen,
Please lift up your glass.
It’s time to honor
Our most loved guest.”
