The second jewel of the Triple Crown was soon to be run,
The fans couldn’t wait to see if the derby winner would be undone,

This was a shorter race than the first,
The horse that would win would have to have a closing burst,

The contenders were ready,
All accept the Cliffs Edge who had been scratched already,

While on the way to starting gate,
Imperialism threw a shoe and made the other horses wait,

The odds were in favor of Smarty Jones the little horse with a big heart,
As Imperialism came back the race was about to start,

Rock Hard Ten refused to load in,
Gary Stevens* had to bail off to save his own skin,

It took 5 minutes and a lot of men,
But finally they got the big horse into the starting gate pen,

The bell sounded very shrill,
The horses took off they new the drill,

Lion Heart was off fast from post one,
He took the lead just as the race had begun,

Smarty Jones was just off the pace,
It was starting to look just like the first race,

Into the first turn Lion Heart veered wide,
Pushing Smarty Jones to the far outside,

Imperialism was up at third,
This was a pace that was not preferred,

Smarty was looking for his hole,
As he saw that Mike did not quite have Lion Heart in control,

Smarty took the inside because the way was clear,
The last race he went on the outside and Lion Heart had found another gear,

This time Lion Heart did not battle back his stride was gone,
But Rock Hard Ten put the heat on,


He started to unravel his massive stride,
And though he tried and tried the gap between him a Smarty was just too
wide,

Smarty cruised to a victory by 11 and half lengths,
Winning was obviously one of his strengths,

This was the largest spaced victory in Preakness races,
Shock was the look on everyone’s faces,

Smarty had done it again he was still undefeated,
He record remained perfect not yet to be unseated,

He waited for his handicapped owner to make his way to the winners circle to
be presented with his awards,
Now Smarty has June 5th to look forward towards,

Will Smarty win the elusive Triple Crown?
Or will he be like so many others to topple down?


*Gary Stevens is a jockey, he played George Wolf in the movie Seabiscuit, he
flew in from France just to ride Rock Hard Ten….and if you have not seen the
movie Seabiscuit you should it’s a great movie*
