Lie

The breaking of my heart, still as ever.
The dying of the flame on the embers.
Broken wings hang down my back,
Unwanted, unneeded, forever black.
Happiness is just another game—
Everything to lose, but nothing to gain.
I believed in you so foolishly,
Then it all came crashing down on me.
True love is just a fairy-tale story—
Prince saves princess and gets all the glory.
But you were no prince and I bore no crown,
Yet I had to keep searching for what couldn’t be found.
The nights we spent staring up at the stars,
Were you only thinking how unhappy you are?
Were you wishing you’d never said hello,
Wanting to just stand up and go?
It’s okay to say yes—I’ll understand.
What I want to know is why you had to pretend.
Was I unworthy of truth, deserving of lies?
Answer me now—look me straight in the eye.
When your gaze falls upon me,
What do you see?
How do you feel,
Knowing none of it’s real?
A mask, if you will—a disguise.
Everyday I wake up living a lie.
Have you ever felt hollow, like nothing’s inside?
Have you ever felt scared enough to run away and hide?
I have—I feel it every day.
Don’t tell me you don’t feel the same.
Did you ever notice, ever care,
When you looked inside and saw nothing there?
Or were you content with living your lie?
You forgot your purpose—only living to die.
I’m sorry to say that I have to leave,
Maybe someday, somehow you’ll see,
And I’ll still be here if you do,
Always, forever, waiting for you.
