Truth?

Looking out through my lowered lids,
I see you,
All of you,
Your faces turned toward me,
But you see right through me.
I want to make you smile.
I want to make you happy.

Am I just a puppy waiting to please its master?
Or am I a bird in a gilded cage,
Wanting to sing a song to see the smiles in return?
What am I to you?
Perhaps I am the doll you whisper your secrets to?

I see others.
Others like me,
Watching and waiting with bated breath for a chance.
A chance to please.
A chance to bring joy.

We don’t care about our own happiness,
Just yours.
Your contentment is all that matters to us.

Tears are kept hidden,
Away from view.
My cheeks are scalded with the path made by these tears.
Charred flesh clings to my face,
As it does with many others'.
We hide the scars with masks.
Fake masks,
Noh masks,
With forged expressions of wood and paint.
Our eyes are dark from the tears we shed and the shadows we hid in.
Hollowed sockets hide our sensitive eyes in darkness.

I want to be here for you, all of you,
But I can’t,
No matter the amount blood I could shed would help.
I am one person.
And in this world,
In this time,
In this reality,
We are all alone.
Struggling to make others happy,
While failing miserably in making ourselves happy.
