Empty Sky

I remember our relationship,
Through countless summer times.
You were mine, that heat and love,
That beautiful sunshine.

I'd close my eyes and laugh with you
Till sunshine turned me red.
Some days, though, you left me here
With shadows on my head.

And today, dear sun, where have you gone,
Have you found another child?
Have you found someone to shine upon
And brightened one more smile.

Have you delighted someone else
Whose home is slipping fast?
Would you give him something, someone like you--
A light, a love at last.

Or have you hid behind the clouds,
I could have sworn you didn't shine.
Not in quite the same old way
You did, when you were mine.

Your light seems so reflected,
This worlds slowly changed.
If I had stayed with you, then
I guess we'd stay the same.

But oh, dear sun, I miss you.
You did not rise today.
You did not rise for months, it seems,
The moons taken you away.

What would you say, oh sun of mine,
If I'd asked you to come home.
Be mine again, and shine again,
It's hard laughing alone.

These happy times-- remembered,
You make me beg with greed.
You used to shine right through the clouds
And glimmer through the leaves.

I'm sitting on my front steps,
For eternity on end.
I'll stare upon the moonlight
And dream of you again.

I shall sit here, I shall weep,
My back is bare on stone.
The chills of fall shall be the call,
To a prayer, that goes unknown.

I shall sit here, I shall weep,
Begging you to rise.
Staring, for eternity,
Upon an empty sky.
