clinging to him she lost herself
in the fabric draped around him and when
she closed her eyes she could pretend that he was
the one who she had lost a long time ago
and he could pretend that she loved him

she did love him when she thought he
was someone else which is little consolation
I guess but when he clung back to her she
wept in to his arms for what might have been
and he tried to believe that she was weeping for joy

he loved her in the way that she had once
and still did love somebody else and she tried
to return it but failed every time she saw something
that was connected with a memory of him
and he would ignore this as he loved her

when they went out for a party or a social
gathering of another kind she'd hold his hand
link her arm through his and try not to look at
the others lest they should see through her
and she'd pretend that she loved him

when she turned the music on and listened
to the lyrics too much then she could forget who
she was and who he was and even forget what she
had lost. She would dance in circles, her hair swirling
and he'd pretend that she loved him

but when the CD finished she would remember who
she was again and she would want nothing more
that to cling to the one she loved and she knew that
it could never be again so she'd cling to the next best thing
and he could pretend that she loved him.
