“Gregory II: Slicing Life From Death”
The door at the end of the cold dark hall
stirs in its sleep and swings to the side
a tall figure silhouetted in the frame
Gregory sits up propped against the back wall
of his small stone and steel enclosure
runs his callused fingers along the steel blade
waiting for the approaching man to come into view
waiting for the opportunity to taste his eternal freedom
a shadow of a man stretches across the floor in front of his cell
Gregory stands slowly strides towards the front and clings to the bars
one hand lags behind his back holding the curved steel weapon
Gregory thrashes out with his left hand and snags the stunned guard
pins his body against the cold steel bars and gazes into his eyes as he
executes
executes the man with terrible precision slicing flesh from bone
slicing life from death
there is no scream to escape the open mouth locked in silence
felling around the beltline Gregory fishes out the keys to the cages
and plucks out his own from the ring of jingling metal pieces
pushes it into the lock and turns it slow slow slowly to the left
pushes the steel bars out from in front of him and steps into the hall
stepping over the blood soaked corpse Gregory moves quickly to the door
still ajar and beckoning him to flee the scene of the crime
softly padding his way quick as you like down the corridors and past the
others
other caged men brooding in their cells too in love with life to risk it for
freedom
Gregory feels no pity for the inmates as he runs clinking his sickle on
their bars
their murmurs fading as he runs away from all of the torture
sliding into the next hallway a sentry blocks Gregory’s path
he rushes with blade out into the belly too large to allow quick movement
and now that high pitched terrible dying scream pierces the air
as blood sprays on the walls and drenches Gregory’s clothes
hardly slowing he runs runs runs down towards the main rooms
and bursts his way inside of their vast emptiness
men with rifles take their mark from high perches on the catwalks
and they fire their weapons at Gregory as he sprints towards the outside
a bullet tears through his leg and down him just outside on the fringe of
the grass
but forcing himself up and to his feet Gregory runs on towards the gates
kicking them open with his left foot he is tackled as he reaches the front
door
raises his blade and brings it down into the skull of his attacker
Gregory stands over the body dripping blood on the ground
and now he stops and takes a look around him
the fences and the cages with razor wire and the steel bars and guards are
gone
looking up he sees the sky for the first time in many years
he can taste his eternal freedom……….
