Lost Innocence

A cruelty that you enjoyed
Cost a life
A life that is looked down upon.
A defenseless creature
Dying from a heated exhaustion
Dying from a plan for your own benefit.
Police ask questions
Yet you deny.
You deny the fact
That you killed an innocent.
That night
You were a regular person
Wanting sleep,
But, you were disturbed by a noise
A noise of an animal
Simply asking for food.
You ignored.
You tried to sleep.
The noise grew louder.
You barged open the door
Skipped the steps and landed
On the lawn.
You reached the dog's face
Duct tape in hand.
An innocent
Destroyed by a predator
That was just a regular person.
A regular person
Charged with a crime
That should be enforced
Yet, 2 years is the punishment.
The punishment of a murder.

(Any one who lives in Texas will understand this poem. A man who lived
across town from me duct taped a dog's face because he was trying to sleep,
and the dog kept barking. The dog died in the 100 degree weather, and the
man will only get 2 years, at the maximum. Is that fair?)
